New Life For The Welsh Economy

Wales deserves better. After 11 years of devolution, Wales is the worse performing economic region in the UK.

Welsh Gross Value Added (GVA), a measure of economic performance, has fallen from 79 to 74% since 1998, despite Assembly Government plans to reach 90%. The Welsh economy relies on a bloated public sector that provides more than 60% of GDP.

In the coming years, public sector spending needs to be cut right across the UK. Unless Wales changes course and promotes and encourages the private sector, those cuts are going to hit hard.

But it doesn't have to be like that. I believe Wales can be an international economic leader.  The economic boom brought about by a coal and steel revolution can be repeated for a new era. Wales has the natural assets, talented and ambitious workforce and global economic connections to be world leader in 'green' technology and clean energy.
