Village Roads In Disrepair

Owen Meredith has criticised Staffordshire Council Council for failing to invest in our road infrastructure.
He said "Staffordshire County Council has continuously cut money from the highways
budget to plug gaps elsewhere in the Council's finances. The County Council need to improve the service they deliver to Staffordshire and urgently address the problem of our decaying road network."

Owen recently took this photograph (right) which shows the state of drain cover grids in Station Road, Keele.

Owen has sent a letter to the County Council, with a copy of the photograph, pointing out the rusted cross bars on the drain grid, and how the weakened cover poses an immediate danger. Any vehicle or person travelling over the grid could easily fall through the weakened cross bars, Owen said, "The rusted cross bars are also extremely sharp and pointed, meaning they could easily puncture tyres; more importantly, children playing in this quiet street could be seriously hurt by the grids."

Owen has urged the Council to rectify the issue and replace the drain covers immediately.

In a wider review of highways and road safety, Owen has also raised the issue of street cleanliness. The main road through Keele village is littered with broken branches, hedge trimmings and mud - not only does this make the village look untidy, but causes problems with road safety. The debris at the side of the road forces vehicles into the centre of the road, and increases risk of collision. The unstable debris on the road also makes braking far more dangerous, and increases stopping distances.

Owen has asked the council to sweep the roads as soon as possible.

The photographs below (taken 24th March) illustrate the current state of the roads in Keele. The photograph on the left (below) was taken in Station Road, the photograph on the right is of The Village.
