My Plan for Newcastle

My Plan

OWEN'S PLAN TO SECURE A BETTER FUTURE FOR NEWCASTLE-UNDER-LYME

  1. SECURING OUR ECONOMIC FUTURE - More jobs, higher wages, stronger businesses
I’ll work with local business leaders to bring investment and jobs to Newcastle. I want to see more partnerships like the New Keele Deal to foster greater innovation and create more high-skilled, high-paid jobs in Newcastle. I’m proud that Conservatives introduced the National Living Wage, raising the pay of thousands of people locally and have cut taxes for over 40,000 local people by increasing the personal allowance, typically saving £1,000 each, every year.

  2. DELIVERING BREXITGetting the best Brexit deal for Newcastle
Every vote for me and the Conservatives strengthens Theresa May’s hand to secure a Brexit deal that works for Newcastle. I’ll consult with businesses and employers to ensure we get the best deal from Brexit that secures jobs here and allows local businesses to grow and invest in Newcastle.

  3. INVESTING IN LOCAL TRANSPORT – Improving our roads and public transport
Newcastle is one of the largest towns in the UK without a railway station. I want to see a feasibility study into reopening the Market Drayton branch line or similar route to connect us with Stoke and HS2. With the Conservatives running Staffordshire County Council, we have committed an extra £3m to fix potholes and repair roads. I’ll campaign for central government funds to go further in upgrading our transport network to help make life easier for local people and more efficient for local businesses.

  4. CONNECTING OUR SCHOOLS AND EMPLOYERS – Helping the next generation get the best start in life
With world-class research and facilities at Keele University, we have an opportunity to continue inspiring the next generation. Building on recent successful initiatives like the LEGO® Education Innovation Studio at Newcastle College, I’ll work hard to connect our biggest employers with local schools and colleges to provide a better future for local children and boost their skills and employability.

  5. COMMITTED TO OUR NHS AND SOCIAL CARE – Protecting and improving local services
Our NHS provides great care locally, and I will always support our NHS doctors and nurses. Royal Stoke is seeing more patients within the 4 hours target, and delivering world class care and I will support the hospital to continue to improve and fight to ensure Staffordshire maintains three A&E units. We need to improve mental health care and invest in social care for our frail and elderly, which I’m pleased the County Council is doing. It is vital we continue strengthening local health services so that patients in Newcastle receive the very best care and treatment, as close to home as possible.

  6. BACKING THE BID – Stoke-on-Trent City of Culture 2021
I want everyone here to benefit from the bid and have greater access to culture locally. Experience from elsewhere shows us that City of Culture status brings visitors and investors to the city and surrounding areas. I’ll work with our neighbours in Stoke to support the bid with the aim of drawing more people to our town and inspiring the next generation to embrace all forms of culture, including music, theatre and the arts.
